Understanding Electricity Usage and Power Units

Calculating electricity usage and costs is essential for managing energy consumption and reducing utility bills. This calculator helps you estimate electricity usage based on appliance power requirements and usage patterns.

Units of Electricity

One of the most common units of electrical power for appliances is the watt (W). Other common units include kilowatts (kW), British thermal units (BTU), horsepower (hp), and tons.

Key Formula: Energy (kWh) = Power (kW) × Time (hours) × Capacity (%) ÷ 100

Power Unit Conversions

Watts and Kilowatts: Watts (W) quantify the rate of energy transfer (1 joule per second). One kilowatt (kW) equals 1,000 watts. Kilowatt-hours (kWh) measure energy - the amount needed to maintain one kilowatt for one hour.

BTU and BTU/h: British thermal units measure heat energy. 1 BTU = 0.2931 watt-hours, and 1 kWh ≈ 3412 BTU.

Horsepower: Used for motors and engines. 1 mechanical horsepower = 745.7 watts, 1 metric horsepower = 735.5 watts.

Ton (Refrigeration): Used for cooling systems. 1 ton ≈ 3517 watts ≈ 12000 BTU/h.

Energy Saving Tips

Monitor Usage: Track energy habits and turn off unused appliances. Use fans instead of AC when possible.

Upgrade Equipment: Replace incandescent bulbs with LEDs (75W vs 9W). Choose energy-efficient appliances.

Smart Controls: Use programmable thermostats for heating/cooling optimization.

Home Insulation: Improve windows, doors, and insulation to reduce heating/cooling costs.

Important Note: Appliance labels show maximum power requirements. Actual usage is typically lower due to capacity settings and usage patterns, which this calculator accounts for.
